Notes on distribution:

Augustus H. Lane Fox Pitt-Rivers (1827-1900) established his own private collection from the 1850s onwards. He donated his collection to the University of Oxford in 1884, but contined to collect privately after that date forming a second collection that he displayed on his private estate at Farham. When this closed many of the objects were sold at auction (8 November 1976 and 4 December 1978 at Sotheby's), some finding their way back into other museum collections such as the British Museum.
