Jesse Haworth (1835-1920) was one of the private sponsors of Petrie's excavations from 1887-1892 as well as being a benefactor of the Egypt Exploration Fund. Inspired by Amelia Edwards' A 1000 miles up the Nile, he became a friend of the authoress. As well as supporting British excavations in Egypt, Haworth was a patron of the Manchester University Museum, contributing substantial amounts for the museum's expansion and his own personal collection of Egyptian antiquities.
