The museum was established in 1911 and named after its first curator, Walter Bagshaw but the building itself was originally an estate of a wealthy mill owner. The Ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection was originally donated to Dewsbury Museum and was later transferred to Bagshaw Museum. They are now both part of Kirklees Community History Service.
