British epigrapher and schoolteacher; he was born in London, 10 June 1908, son of John Fletcher B., an inspector in the Board of Agriculture, and Hilda Margaret Summerley; he studied at University College London under Margaret Murray; recommended by Glanville, he served as epigrapher on the Amarna excavation under Pendlebury, 1930-1 but did not get on well with him; he continued his studies at University College London under Glanville; he became a schoolteacher at Colchester, 1940-73; he contributed several articles to JEA; he died in Chichester, 8 Oct. 1977.
