The museum building was purpose-built in 1874, and opened in 1876; and is a grade II listed building. The museum holds 360 ancient Egyptian objects which are part of the Archaeology collection.

In the distribution records in the British Museum "Tor" is listed as a destination for material from Saqqara in 1964, the online records do mention six items from Saqqara.
