The collection of Egyptian artefacts is indebted to a local patron Marianne Brocklehurst, the daughter of a wealthy silk mill owner, who travelled to Egypt with her companion Mary Booth where they met Amelia Edwards. Marianne became a founding member of the Egypt Exploration Fund. Her collection started in the 1870s was housed in the West Park Museum, an institution funded by her brother.
