The Museum of Antiquities of the University of Heidelberg was founded in 1848 as an archaeological teaching collection, which offers an overview of the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean from the 3rd Millennium BC. The University of Heidelberg also has a large teaching collection within the Department of Egyptology, designed in 1910 by Hermann Ranke and containing mostly finds from German excavations. The university’s Institute of Papyrology holds one of the largest papyrus collections in Germany.
