Margaret Blanche Elizabeth Shinnie

British archaeologist; she was born Harston, Cambridgeshire, 29 Oct. 1918, daughter of Philip Cyril Cloake, Professor of Neurology, Birmingham University, and Letitia Blanche Macdonald; in 1940 she married Peter Shinnie, later Commissioner for Archaeology in the Sudan; she took part in the excavations at Amara West, Soba, Tanaqasi, Ghazali, Debeira West, and Meroe; following her divorce, she retained her interest in Sudanese archaeology and served on the council of the British Institute in Eastern Africa; assistant editor of the Journal of the Royal Geographic Society; she published Linant de Bellefonds, journal d’un voyage à Méroé dans les années 1821 et 1822, 1958; Ancient African Kingdoms, 1966; and with her former husband Debeira West, 1978; she died at Ashwellthorpe, Norfolk, 10 Jan. 1995.
