Owens College was set up in 1851 by the merchant John Owens, and eventually joined the federal Victoria University which was comprised of other colleges in Liverspool and Leeds in 1880. In 1904, after the collapse of the fedeal university, the insitution was renamed the Victoria University of Manchester before finally merging in 2004 with the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology to form the University of Manchester.
